The data presented in the review indicate the importance of the essential trace element Se for ensuring normal human activity. The results of the research on the supply of selenium to the population in different regions and modern approaches to the objective assessment of its content in the body are reflected. The reference rates of selenium consumption based on the determination of the concentration of selenoprotein (SePP) as the most objective marker for determining the optimal supply of Se are presented. It has been proven that a decrease or, on the contrary, an increase in the intake of dietary Se can have a negative effect on the state of health, lead to the development of chronic somatic and mental diseases including depression. Our own data on the negative impact of Se deficiency on the formation and adverse course of diffuse nontoxic goiter (DNG) in children and adolescents living in conditions of mild iodine deficiency are presented.

Ways of prevention and correction of selenium deficiency from the standpoint of evidence-based medicine and the need for individual prevention and correction of Se deficiency by prescribing dietary selenium are considered, especially in the absence of state programs that include enrichment of soils, fodder and food products with Se compounds. The expediency of including Se drugs in the complex therapy of patients with an unfavorable course of the thyroid gland, which had a positive effect on the state of the thyroid system, somato-sexual development, the state of somatic and mental health, cognitive functions and the quality of life of adolescents, has been scientifically substantiated.

The results of clinical and experimental studies are presented, which show that the inclusion of Se drugs in age-related doses in therapy can prevent the formation of metabolic syndrome and obesity, disorders of carbohydrate metabolism and thyropathies, increase the effectiveness of treatment of patients with various somatic and mental diseases, and increase physical endurance during intensive loads in athletes.

}, number={4}, journal={Problems of Endocrine Pathology}, author={Турчина, Світлана and Сотнікова-Мелешкіна, Жанна and Калмикова, Юлія and Калмиков, Сергій and Міхановська, Наталія}, year={2022}, month={Dec.}, pages={67-73} }
