Does the author of the scientific journal ORCID need?
The contribution of a particular researcher, his publications, is difficult to unambiguously recognize, since most personal names are not unique, they can change (for example, in marriage), an ambiguous situation, often arises when searching for articles by an author with very common surnames such as "Bondarenko", "Shevchenko "," Sidorov ",. If suddenly the scientist is "unlucky" with the surname, and it is very common, then checking the publications submitted somewhere turns into a problem and at the same time there are many ambiguities.
The question arises - is there a way out? At the moment, you can unequivocally answer: YES! And the title of this affirmative answer: ORCID.
ORCID (Open Researcher and Contributor ID) — is a non-profit project, started in October 2012 and assigns to everyone who wishes a unique, open (unpatented) alphanumeric code that uniquely identifies scientific authors - a number (ID ORCID) and is a subset of the International Standard Name Identifier (ISNI). This code provides permanent identification for people, similar to that created for content-related objects on digital networks using digital object identifiers (DOIs).
In October 2015, DataCite, CrossRef and ORCID announced that ORCID records will be updated "when an ORCID is found in newly registered DOI names."
Why you need an ORCID ID:
- letters (spelling of the surname and first name) are replaced with numbers. All questions related to writing by ear, writing in various languages, etc .;
- the process of identification of the author and connection with his articles is simplified and automated;
Who benefits from ORCID ID:
- for author. Providing your ORCID ID makes it easier to reconcile author information;
- for author. There is no need to collect a list of your publications. Each publisher submits information about articles published in its journals;
- for edition. You can always contact the author and see all his publications;
- for university. Track information about your employees, generate reports on scientific activities;
- for publishing house. After the publication of an article, information about it can be sent to the ORCID database;
- for scientific communities. Ability to administer members of their communities. Participants of their conferences;
- for funds. You can always see a list of publications of a certain author and grants received by him earlier;
- for libraries. Say goodbye to the cataloging process for the authors.
How much does ORCID ID cost:
registration and obtaining an ORCID ID for individuals is free.
Information about the author stored in the ORCID account:
- spelling of the surname and first name and all possible spellings;
- the name of the organization where the author works;
- information about author's education
- list of articles by the author;
- list of grants received by the author, or in which he participated;
- functionality is expanding.
At the moment, the following organizations, publishers and foundations use the ORCID base to identify authors: CrossRef, Elsevier, IEEE, ImpactStory, Springer, Thomson Reuters, Wiley.
