Abstract

Chronic autoimmune thyroid disease (CATh) or Hashimoto's thyroiditis is one of the main autoimmune thyroid diseases in childhood. It is characterized by the production of antithyroid antibodies, infiltration of autoreactive B- and T-lymphocytes into the thyroid parenchyma and, as a result, changes in the function of the thyroid gland (euthyroidism or subclinical hypothyroidism in CATh with possible evolution towards overt hypothyroidism). Celiac disease (C) is a systemic autoimmune disease caused by gluten ingestion in genetically predisposed individuals with a prevalence of about 1% in Western countries. It is manifested by pathognomonic enteropathy, a variety of clinical manifestations, a positive titer of specific antibodies, the presence of typical HLA DQ2/DQ8 haplotypes. C may be a variant of comorbid pathology in various autoimmune endocrinopathies, such as CATh, type 1 diabetes mellitus, Addison's disease, and polyendocrine syndromes. The article analyzes literature data for the last 40 years on the relationship between thyroid disorders and celiac disease in both adults and children, and also presents our own data on the frequency of C in children with CATh.
