Abstract

It was found that the intake of nicotine by rats of pregnant females in conjunction with a reduction in the volume of food consumed has a significant impact on the system of «placenta – fetus» in offspring of both sexes, significantly reducing the morphological and functional characteristics and capabilities of the placenta due to toxic and vasoconstrictor effects of nicotine. Toxic effects of nicotine, even in low doses, in pregnant females during passive smoking leads to fetal and postnatal death of a high percentage of fetuses and is a predictor of deep changes in the structure and hormone-producing function of the offspring thyroid glands.
