TYPE 1 DIABETES MELLITUS AND CELIAC DISEASE: A REVIEW OF LITERATURE

Abstract

Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) and gluten-sensitive celiac disease (GSD) are among the most recognized related autoimmune disorders, as they share a common genetic background that has been identified in the HLA genotype, specifically in the DQ2 and DQ8 molecules. Studies have shown that environmental factors, such as early or late cereal consumption in the first months of life or acquired viral infections, have been implicated in the risk of developing autoantigens. Celiac disease, in most cases, is asymptomatic. This article presents a review of the literature on the pathogenesis, clinical course, screening, and treatment options for type 1 diabetes mellitus in the presence of a comorbid autoimmune pathology - celiac disease.
