Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease caused by impaired carbohydrate metabolism. Its prevalence is increasing significantly. Like any lifelong disease, type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) significantly affects the quality of life (QoL) of patients. QOL is impacted physically by chronic diabetes complications and psychologically by anxiety and depression. Studies show a complex, bidirectional relationship between sleep and T2DM. Objective: To investigate the quality of life in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus depending on the presence of sleep disorders.
Materials and methods. The study was conducted on the basis of the branch of the «Center for Endocrine Health of the Population» of the Lviv Regional Clinical Diagnostic Center and was based on the examination of 132 patients with T2DM. Among the examined patients, there were 72 women (55 %) and 60 men (45 %). The mean age of the patients was (57.1 ± 10.2) years. The mean HbA1c level was 8.85 [7.5; 10.0] %, and the mean duration of T2DM was 7 [4; 11] years. The sleep study was conducted using the PSQI questionnaire, and quality of life was determined using the SF-36 quality of life assessment questionnaire.
Results. Our study revealed a negative correlation between the total score of the PSQI questionnaire and most SF-36 quality of life indicators. This indicates that sleep disorders and poor sleep quality decrease vital activity and role functioning due to physical conditions. The correlation coefficient between diabetes duration and physical functioning was (r = – 0.16, p < 0.05). This means a longer diabetes duration negatively affects the physical functioning index.
Conclusions. The presence of sleep disorders in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus leads to a deterioration in a number of quality of life indicators compared with patients without sleep disorders, regardless of the degree of diabetes compensation. It has been established that a longer duration of diabetes negatively affects indicators of physical functioning in patients with poor sleep quality, therefore it is important to timely diagnose and treat sleep disorders in this cohort of patients.
