Abstract

The article reviews the research literature on comorbid pathology in liver and thyroid gland. It generalizes the statistical data on expansion in the contemporary society of such a disease as the non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). It addresses varied mechanisms of the NAFLD development, including the mitochondrial dysfunction, disorders in endoplasmic reticulum and the oxidative stress, as well as the formation of reactive oxygen species and the secretion of inflammatory cytokines. The authors depict the pathophysiological liaison existing between the NAFLD and hypothyroidism as the complex process involving changes in levels of cytokines, markers of oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation, that are accompanied with disturbances of selenium homeostasis and disorders of lipid metabolism. The paper analyzes numerous multifactorial population studies made recently over the association of the NAFLD and hypothyroidism.
